Wind Technicians
LOCATION: Scotland & England (Cheshire)
SALARY: £35K
Our Client designs and builds renewable energy solutions for the industrial, commercial and public sector. Their solutions focus on energy efficiency and the replacement of grid supplied energy with renewable energy technologies such as wind power, solar photovoltaic’s (PV), ground source heating (GSH), solar thermal, biomass and micro hydro. Projects include onsite generation and off-site solutions such as the development and construction of wind farms. Their clients vary from global retailers, logistics companies, large engineering firms, local authorities through to farmers/landowners.
Candidates will have experience of visiting potential wind turbine/farm sites and are capable of compiling a prefeasibility study, which typically includes the following:
Site visit - assess optimum location of turbine, establish capacity of grid connection, access and lay down areas.
Desktop assessment of wind speed using a national database of wind speed and other data sources to estimate the wind speed at the site. Includes the impacts of noise, shadow flicker and visual intrusion on the local area.
Analysis of site electrical load – analysis of half hourly electrical load data to create a load profile to estimate the likely ratio of on-site consumption to export.
Assessment of appropriate turbine sizes and types - using the above data and average installation costs to assess the economic and environmental benefit of different turbine sizes. The assessment will determine the turbines that maximise ROI and carbon savings and that are developable in terms of space availability, noise and other impacts.
Desk based analysis of potential barriers to the development – such as considerations relating to the Civil Aviation Authority, MOD, RSPB, Local Planning Authority etc.
A summary report including material considerations including key planning risks. The report would enable a decision to be made regarding whether the site is developable for wind and if so which turbine size and type is most suitable. The estimated project cost, carbon savings and return on investment would also be presented.
Ideally, you will be a graduate in an environmental, engineering or energy related discipline. Excellent verbal and written communication abilities are essential. In particular, we would expect the successful candidate to have:
· Experience of the wind energy sector and in particular the small wind turbine market
· Knowledge of planning policy for wind turbines
· Knowledge of grants and legislation applicable to this sector
· Examples of written prefeasibility/payback estimates
· Technical knowledge of turbine engineering
· Knowledge of requirements for electrical connection
· A proactive approach to sales
· A willingness to travel extensively in the UK and in Europe
